Your bike is a valuable investment, and you will come to rely on it. Preventing the theft of your bike is not to be taken lightly.
There are two ways to prevent the theft of your bike. Firstly, investing in a good quality lock is essential. Many locks are quite cheap, and therefore the quality is sometimes not very good.
However, you CAN be sure that you do get what you pay for. Police guidelines suggest that you spend approx 10% of the value of your bike on a lock to secure it. Don't be duped into buying a cheaplocks which may look really robust and strong. Many cheap shackle locks can be broken quickly and simply with nothing more than a hammer. They may appear well made, but a professional cycle thief will quickly break the lock, and take your bike. Many insurance companies will specify the exact makes and models of lock that they will approve, and will expect you to secure your bicycle to an immovable object.
The majority of people dont seem to justify spending over £100.00 on a lock, so a good compromise is to buy the best that you can afford. You should look for locks that carry the "Sold Secure" logo, as these have been tested and guranteed to withstand attack for a published time. They are graded as Bronze, Silver and Gold. A reasonable quality Sold Secure Silver level lock would cost in the region of £40.00 to £70.00 pounds.
You can further enhance your cycle security by mixing physical security (A good lock) with a Deterrent Effect.
Most cycle thieves are casual opportunists, who will observe a bike parked outside a newsagent or shop, whilst the owner "Just nips in" for a paper. In that 30 seconds, the thief will simply stroll over, mount the bike, and just ride off.
So a deterrent is needed. Greased lightning Cycles have just the product to help!
